It's funny, just the other day I was thinking to myself...
When's the last time I saw a film that meant something. I mean, a film that really tugged at the heartstrings. Of course this film would have to also include the following; incest, rape, bestiality, and most importantly decapitation by bulldozer. Needless to say I realized it had been a while. Then, like a sign from god himself, Island of Death lands on my desk in a brand spankin' new special edition DVD. God bless the digital age!
Note: If this opening paragraph offended you, it's best to leave now. Believe me, it's gonna get worse before it gets any better.
We'll start with a brief synopsis of the story...
(If there was a story, this is where the description would be)
OK, now we'll move onto the good stuff. Island of Death is basically a hodge podge of violence and perverted sexuality. There, I said it, now I feel much better. It breaks down like this; Two lovers (turns out they are brother and sister) go nutzo on a small Greek island. They figure it's their job to rid the world of sinners and the like (it seems as if mostly adulterers and homosexuals fall into this category). One by one they schmooze, and then brutally dispose of their victims, documenting their rampage every step of the way with their still camera. This is what you've signed up for folks, cause that's basically it. I think I ran through a nice selection of the perversity in the opening paragraph. Oh wait, did I mention the middle-aged woman who gets urinated on? So sorry!
Now, let me tell you why I liked this film (aside from the goat f*%king scene). For starters, it's competently directed. I know I know, this sounds silly, but believe me when I say, something shines through here. The director Nico Mastorakis speaks in a 30-minute segment about the production of the film, and it's truly fascinating. He explains how he made what he calls a "recipe" film. The film was made for one reason and one reason only, to make money. Mr. Mastorakis is not shy in discussing this fact. He wasn't trying to make a cult classic, and he wasn't trying to make an exploitation film that people would talk about to this day. He just wanted to make some green so he could move onto bigger and better productions. He's obviously a talented filmmaker, because even in this $30, 000 production with barely a crew to support him, he made a film that still holds up technically to this day.
Island of Death is presented full frame and was struck from a brand new print and it looks spectacular. Colors are solid and sharp, with barely a sign of 70's era style, this film looks like it could have been shot with a Bolex 16mm camera last week. There are a few hints of print damage early on (very slight, mind you) beyond that, it looks outstanding. Sound is presented in Dolby Digital Mono, and is equally impressive. Dialogue is clear, and that cheesy 70's "AM Gold" soundtrack rocks the house!
Extras include the three "AM Gold" era songs isolated with scenes and stills from the film. It's definitely a nice addition, if not a bit bizarre. Also included is the 30 minute segment with director Nico Mastorakis I spoke of earlier. Mr. Mastorakis is a well spoken intelligent filmmaker, and everything he says makes sense. He discusses every aspect from the production of the film (including the actors and special effects), to his general thoughts on censorship. He believes a film that truly shocks and disturbs, is just as valuable as a film that makes you laugh or cry, and I agree with him 100%.
Obviously this is not a film for everyone. If your idea of a good time is a Diet Mr. Pibb, a box of SnowCaps and the latest Meg Ryan movie, then please stay away from this film. However, if you're looking for something a little different, disturbing, shocking, perhaps even mortifying, then this is your ticket right here.
