I know I know, WWE’s brand of wrestling is fake, and therefore not a sport. The ‘E’ in WWE is for entertainment, which some purists say puts wrestlers out of the realm of “athlete.” All betting and semantics aside, would you rather watch two mediocre boxers bear hug for the majority of a twelve round fight, or watch two (or maybe thirty!) dynamic wrestlers bear hug…and eye gouge, do back flips, and do things with tables and chairs that the office furniture industry never intended, and, well…you get the picture.
Wrestling video games traditionally have matched the pound-for-pound excitement of this sport/soap opera. Much of this success can be attributed to one development house—Yuke’s—which has been with McMahon and company for some time; even back when it was still known as the WWF. That’s eight full years of World Wrestling-branded video games for those too lazy to access the wrestling wiki.
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 is the 9th game for Yuke’s with the WW licensing, and the third game out for the Xbox 360 from the Japanese wrestling giant. Yuke’s objective for WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 is clear: Keep, but tweak, the existing engine, add a ton of customization and modes, and stay current with the goings-on in both wrestling properties. It’s objective: Achieved for the most part in WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010, as the result of Yuke’s hard work is a grappler that easily hurdles its 360 predecessor.
The one area of WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 which let a lot of the series’ fans down was the core gameplay dynamic. Even though WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 uses the same engine as last year’s affair, Yuke’s spent ample time getting things up to snuff. There’s better hit detection in nearly every match scenario, as well as a greater attention to “hot spots” which cue things such as entering/exiting the ring and indicate when a superstar should be climbing to the top rope for aerial maneuvers. The controls are more responsive to boot, but there still isn’t a clear-cut logic to the move sets; it seems as if the CPU has the ultimate say-so in which of the bigger moves will be performed. Most of the emphasis on core gameplay improvement occurs in tag team matches (which have gotten much better with double-up moves and easy-to-unleash “hot tags”), but a bit more work in the one-on-one situations would have gone further in making WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 a stronger game across all match types.
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 definitely looks better than last year, but it still falls behind newcomer TNA Impact in overall realism. Granted, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 has a lot more content to render, but the basic character models and animations are more polished in Midway’s ringer. It’s nice to see Yuke’s put time into making WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 better than its franchise predecessor, however. Facial maps are greatly improved, as is the “sweat” engine and general body texturing. Clipping is still there, and there are a few too many pinning (not pin as in a wrestling pin, but as in two objects correctly interacting with one another) issues, but overall, the in-ring aesthetics are acceptable.
