Band Hero - Top Five Things to Know

Millions of virtual rock stars have used the Guitar Hero games to shred and wail, but what about the American Idol crowd? Wannabe pop stars have something to sing about as their game has finally arrived with Band Hero. Combining karaoke and instrument play with more mainstream acts, this new rhythm game is wrapped in a bubblegum shell that should make teenage girls go Lady Gaga over it. But what else can aspiring stars expect?

1. It's just like Guitar Hero, but different

When it's time to rock, no one wants to waste precious minutes learning how to play. Thankfully, Band Hero is built on the same engine as the Guitar Hero series, so you'll be ready to go right out of the box. Most existing rhythm game instruments are compatible, and all the game modes you know and love are included...with one new addition: a karaoke-inspired Sing-Along mode that's perfect for those who don't want to be bothered with plastic instruments. After all, it's the singer that's the star, right?

2. Band together with a family-friendly music game

Don't get us wrong -- we love our hard rock -- but sometimes we need something a little less daunting than extreme guitar licks and seedy clubs. That's where Band Hero shines as a family-friendly experience, pushing pink and neon instead of mosh pits and skulls. It's also the first E-rated music game from the Hero team, making it a game for all ages. And thanks to drop-in/drop-out play, gamers can come and go as they please, making it that much easier to belt out some motivational “Walking on Sunshine” before heading out to school or work.

3. Channel your inner Taylor Swift...by being her

Design the perfect diva with Band Hero's in-depth character generator, which sports loads of hairstyles, outfits and accessories, with even more available to unlock in-game or via the Nintendo DS for Wii owners. Those not feeling so creative can pick from preset characters or go for the gold with Grammy-nominated artist Taylor Swift. Maroon 5's Adam Levine and No Doubt are also available for those looking to bring even more star power to the table.

4. More than 60 of your favorite Top 40

Where Band Hero really stands apart from its Guitar and DJ Hero cousins is with its more mainstream tracklist. Including 65 songs across different eras, Band Hero offers everything from yesteryear's Devo and the Village People to today's top acts like Fall Out Boy and Angels and Airwaves. There's even a bunch of family favorites like “Kung-Fu Fighting,” the Jackson 5's “ABC” and “Our Lips Are Sealed” by the Go-Gos. If that's not enough, the downloadable song libraries of Guitar Hero: World Tour and Guitar Hero 5 offer even more opportunities to sing and dance the night away. Just make sure you've brought plenty of throat lozenges.

5. Party all the time, at home and on the go with Nintendo

Though Band Hero supports multiple instruments, you might not own them all. Thankfully, players who own both a Wii and a Nintendo DS can take advantage of the exclusive DS Party Play to create set lists or even direct their own music video inside the Mii Freestyle mode, using the DS to adjust lights and camera angles. And if you have the game for both Wii and DS, you can unlock new items for your rocker, so no matter where you go, the band comes with you. So yes, you can sing “Y.M.C.A.” at the Y.M.C.A. They love that.
