Pure Football (also known as Pure Futbol in North America) is an upcoming football video game developed by Ubisoft Vancouver and published by Ubisoft. It was announced on March 2009 with a trailer.
For a sport so popular with a gigantic cross section of society, football videogames are, quite frankly, bewildering. Capturing the essence of one of the most dynamic sports in the world unfortunately makes this an inevitability, but the rise of the so-called causal market has seen developers attempt to circumvent these problems to get more potential players through the digital turnstiles. EA has already co-opted its latest FIFA iteration to include a two-button control scheme (or the ‘dad pad’, as they informally call it) to facilitate inclusiveness, and now Ubisoft is attempting to distil football into its most appealing elements, theatrics and fabulous skills, to present an alternative to the core Pro Evolution Soccer/FIFA axis.
Players will get to mingle with 230 of the world’s best players, 17 top international teams and three legendary teams as they battle their way to Africa to prove they have the best team in the business. As is apparent, those awe-inspiring moments of brilliance from the actual sport will occur with much more frequency than in reality, and the ‘Pure Shots’ mechanic promises to give players unique presentation and control over perfectly judged strikes. The FIFA ‘Be a Pro’ (or, if you prefer, the Libero Grande) style of camera that looks over the shoulder of your controlled player should be an interesting inclusion to get players to feel like they are actually in the game rather than watching it, as will the motion blur and other various effects aimed at breaking from the standard Sky Sports telecast style of presentation.
The inclusion of a Campaign mode that enables players to create a five-a-side superstar, build him up and impress and recruit the world’s best players to your team should also add some trace of depth to the game, but, it must be said, at the moment Pure Football looks and sounds an awful lot like EA’s own FIFA Street series of games, which have much the same setup and general aesthetic styling. As anyone who has played the Street games will attest, the problem with what they and Pure Football attempt to achieve is that football is such an amazing game due to the anticipation, rather than proliferation of moments of wonder such as goals, tricks and skills, that to oversaturate a footballing experience with them only loses the essence of the game. Titles like Madden Arcade, Blitz: The League and NHL 3-on-3 are better suited to this sort of simplification due to the high-scoring nature of the sports they represent, but we’re interested to see what mechanics Pure can implement to redress this balance between spectacle and anticipation.
