A big part of Red Dead Redemption is treasure. Sometimes Red Dead Redemption treasures jump up and slap you in the face yelling “Here I am!”, and other times they can be a serious challenge to get. The key to finding treasures of course is treasure maps. To get your first treasure map you need to save a stranger who is being attacked by bandits.
You’ll encounter your first stranger driving a wagon. He will be getting robbed by bandits. Once you save him, you get your first treasure map. To help find a wagon quick, listen for a gunfight, and then get to it ASAP. If you get there too late or mess it up, don’t worry - you will have other chances. Once you get your first map from the stage driver and find your first treasure chest, the next treasure map will be in the chest you just opened. That part of the process is really simple.
So far, there are 9 known treasures. There may be more secret treasures discovered at a later date via unlocking secret missions or something that haven’t been cracked yet, but for now it is just the 9. New Austin is where you will find the first two treasures, and the next 5 you will get while in Mexico. The final pair of treasures are in Black Water. The specifics on them are as follows:
* Jackson’s Gold: can be found in the area known as “Del Robo Rock”
* Brown’s Gold: can be found in the eastern area of Escalera
* Tubman’s Gold: can be found in the north region of Chuparosa
* Calhoun’s Gold: in Tumbleweed’s mansion in the underground room
* Douglass’ Gold: located at the south of Chuparosa
* Stonewall’s Gold: located at north Manzanita
* Pickett’s Gold: Waiting to be discovered at the Beecher’s Hope
* Garrison’s Gold: at the northeast of Agave Viejo
* Rhodes’ Gold: can be found at the Hanging Rock at Cholla Springs
You'll find Rhodes Gold north of Armadillo in Chollo Springs. Del Dobo Rock is also called hanging Rock, so keep that in mind when navigating to the chest. Look for the largest boulder, and then spot a pile rocks - that is your first treasure and your map to the next treasure. After this one it does start to get a bit harder, but only in reasonable increments.
For Jackson's Gold, make sure you save your game before trying to grab it. It is not at all uncommon to bite the bullet on this one a time or two falling off. Locate the gap at Del Dobo Rock and
head to the right. Stay on the path until you reach the drop down, then follow that until you spot the chest on a small ledge.
Calhoun's Gold is in the basement of the mansion in Tumbleweed. Go to the west side of the mansion, use the back entrance, and walk straight until you see the bull skull. Look down, and there is treasure #3.
To get to Tubman's Gold, start from the tree of skulls and head to the San Luis River. Work north of Chuparosa until you find the second stone wall. Once you locate that look on the river side of the wall and you have your 4th treasure.
Browns Gold can be pretty tricky - and another you want to save game on before undertaking. Go east of Escalera to Punta Orgullo until you reach the rock spines at Crooked Toes. Go past the small cave to the chest and climb the spire. use Jump.hang.climb to do this. pretty basic unless you are lacking dexterity.Douglass Gold is at Ojo Del Diablo which is south of Chuparosa. Head to the arch and look around on the wast side of it and you'll find the treasure chest. This one is about as easy as it gets.
Garrison's Gold is located northeast of Agave Viejo. Look for a stool-shaped rock from the first two treasure maps for the main road leading northwest from Casa Madrugada. It is above the armadillo on the main map. Once you find the stool-shaped rock, head southwest until you see a path that begins above the rock spires. Follow that until it runs out and you've found the treasure.
Pickett's Gold is east of Beecher Hope Ranch. Look for the tree that was struck by lightning and looks forked. Head north from there to the stone fence and look for the gap. That is where the treasure is hidden.
To find the final treasure, Stonewall's Gold, go north from Manzanita Post until you hit the horse trail that is covered in snow. Follow that until you find the plateau. Once you get there, look for the cave on the north side - the treasure is hidden there.
You don't need to get the treasures to complete the missions, but it's hardly fun without the little extra challenge and reward. Use your maps - you have them for a reason. Some are very simple and a few will challenge you, so if you're prone to dying often to begin with, there is no shame in saving before you go adventuring for Red Dead Redemption treasures.
