Now that the Tony Hawk series has fallen on hard times, comparative newcomer Skate is the only serious contender in the park. The third game in this successful series arrives this week, and while few are kick-flipping out over it, it's turning in a middling-to-good performance in early reviews.
As Skate 3 rolls to store shelves, critics are delivering a consistent endorsement: there's little new here, but the tweaks (among them, a new emphasis on social network-style gameplay, and a host of new tricks) are welcome.
IGN gives it an 8.0/10, calling it "still the best skateboarding you’ll find in videogames," but cites a couple of caveats...namely, it's too frustrating, and it's not all that much of an improvement from the last Skate.
Still, set it next to the disastrous performance of the most recent in the once proud Tony Hawk series (last year's Tony Hawk: Ride, with an aggregate score in the 40s), and it's clear that although Skate might be resting on its laurels, it's still riding roughshod over the competition.
