Sony puts you in the driver's seat with 'ModNation Racers'

When it comes to racing games, there are lots of varieties – from hard-core simulations (think Need for Speed) to kid-friendly multiplayer goofs like Nintendo's smash hit Mario Kart. Having staked out territory on the more realistic end of the spectrum with its acclaimed Gran Turismo series, Sony's now going in a lighter direction with its new ModNation Racers.
ModNation encourages players to hop into colorful, customizable karts and tool around a virtually limitless number of competitive tracks – racing against friends at home, other players online, or the computer. The art style is whimsical in the extreme – the characters driving the karts appear to be distant cousins of the sack-people from Sony's LittleBigPlanet – but the core gameplay is based on tight physics and intuitive mechanics. Corner drifting, speed boosts, weapons to shoot at your opponents – it's all in there.

Why, you may ask, is the number of tracks "virtually limitless?" Because the content that ships with ModNation Racers is only the tip of the iceberg. Packed in with the title is a set of extremely powerful tools allowing not merely the customization of your onscreen avatar and kart, but indeed the creation of whole new tracks. Here too the game is a cousin of LittleBigPlanet, putting faith in the power of the fan community to provide content for a long time to come.
We got some time to play around with the track-creation tools in ModNation, and they're impressive. An intuitive interface allows you to select brushes, drop tracks, add scenery, and even create shortcuts, all with a few d-pad nudges and button pushes. Within minutes it's possible to construct a fully functional track – or, if you get tired of all that creative labor, the computer game take over for you at any time, extrapolating a completed track from what you've laid down so far. All user-created content can be shared online and rated by other players, and accessed via a virtual in-game hub called the ModSpot.
Look for ModNation Racers to hit stores on May 25, in both PS3 and PSP versions.
