Supreme Ruler 2010 is a computer wargame in which a player who controls all aspects of a region's government attempts to unite a world of fragmented states of the world in the year 2010.The game was produced by BattleGoat Studios and released by Strategy First on 10 May 2005.Official support for Supreme Ruler 2010 ended in August 2006 with the release of the 6th update. The final version of the product was 4.6.1. For continuing support issues see the BattleGoat Forums listed below. On 17 June 2008, a sequel, Supreme Ruler 2020 was released by publisher Paradox Interactive.
Ambition isn't always a good thing in strategy-game design. When developers push the envelope too far, they often end up with either an interface that plays like a logic puzzle, or so many statistics that it would be less painful to smack yourself in the face with an economics textbook. So it's something of a miracle that Supreme Ruler 2010 is downright user-friendly. Even though the BattleGoat Studios production is as elaborate as anything this side of the rather boat anchorlike SuperPower 2, this is one playable and enjoyable geopolitical simulation. Complexity and accessibility are rarely so well-balanced in a strategy game.
OK, this doesn't look very inviting, but trust us, the user interface is more friendly that it appears at first glance.
First impressions won't leave you with that idea, however. BattleGoat and publisher Strategy First ship the game with a dense 150-page manual and terse tutorials with no interactivity aside from that provided by reading dozens of text boxes. The background story is also complex. Four pages are required to recount the tale of a debt-ridden United States, which is self-destructing economically and taking the rest of the planet with it. OPEC reacts to American troubles by changing the world's oil currency from greenbacks to Euros in mid-2005, and this causes the biggest market crash in history. Economies are so devastated that most nations splinter along regional and ethnic lines. When the game begins in 2010, the US is a collection of independent states, the Canadian provinces have abandoned confederation, Europe has broken into fiefdoms reminiscent of the medieval era, and so on.
The system requirements are:
Pentium III 800 MHz
128 MB of RAM
Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
4X CD-ROM
DirectX 8.1
32 MB of VRAM
Keyboard and Mouse.
Gameplay: 8.5
One thing that you will have to give the developers is that they created a finely tuned strategy game. Thanks to the tutorial, you will understand the basics of the game, which makes the game easy to start playing. As you progress throughout the game it will become more addicting as you will want the world to be under your control.
Graphics: 7.5
The graphics for this game are a mixed bag. I liked the scale of all of the countries and accurate representation of the sizes and this is due to them using real satellite imagery. What is on the down side is the look and feel of all of your units. They are not as detailed as they could have been.
Sound: 7.3
The music and sound effects are pretty generic.
Difficulty: Medium
Depending on your skill level will define how hard this game will be for you.
Concept: 8.0
I really liked how this game was not too hard to pick up on, and how the developers used satellite images to recreate the world. This made the game feel more realistic.
Multiplayer: 7.9
You will be able to play up to sixteen people online.
Overall: 8.3
While Supreme Ruler 2010 is not the prettiest game in the world, it does have a lot of depth that will keep players coming back for ages. Those gamers who only like to play games with the best graphics may be disappointed and shun the game immediately, but if you give it a chance it will surprise you.
