The first and most important source of traffic is search engine traffic also known as organic traffic.This is the most valuable traffic that can earn you more money than any other form of traffic but it is quite difficult to generate organic traffic.You must update your blog/site regularly and create back links for your site , you should add popular keywords in your post title and post body. Back links decide the appearance of your blog/site in a search. Suppose there are 2 sites A and B both have a post based on same topic but site A has more back links to his post than site B and if a person search for that topic on a search engine Site A's post will get high rank in the search as compared to site B.
Second most important way to get instant traffic to your blog/site is submitting your post to social networking sites like Orkut , Twitter , Face book , and many more.You can create an account there and post latest updates of your site/blog with a link to the updates.But there is a disadvantage of posting your updates at social networking sites as it is not counted as a back link and search engine does not crawl social networking sites except Face book.
Third way is not so famous but it is yet the most effective and less time consuming way to gain traffic and the traffic you will get is also long lasting.You can submit your news/post to hotklix.com to generate traffic to your site/blog. It is also crawled by search engine at regular basis so your news can appear in search result with the help of hotklix.com. One of my blog is generating 7 to 8% traffic from hotklix.com . But it does not create back link to your site as they do not post direct link of your story on their site.But one advantage is that you can create huge traffic from there as much as 4 to 5 thousand hits per day if your news is unique and intresting one.
Fourth popular way to generate traffic to your site/blog is submitting your post/news to social bookmarking sites like digg , spurl etc . It is a good way to create traffic to your site as most social bookmarking sites post direct like to your news/post which is counted as back link by search engines.If your blog does not rank high in a certain search but your news submitted to social bookmarking site can rank higher in search engines and generate traffic for you.
Mixx.com is also a good source of traffic it is very much similar to hotklix.com .Here you have to submit your blog/site post as similar to hotklix.com .But if you have a blog on blogger.com and does not have a custom domain name (your own domain name like: yoursite.com not yoursite.blogspot.com) you can not submit news there as they do not accept blogger.com address but there is a loophole that i have discovered . You can shorten your post/news url by using Url shorting site like http://tiny.cc/ and use that link as the link for your news/post.
You can write articles and submit them to article directories and place a link to your post/news it will increase your search engine rank as by this method you can create back link for your site/blog because most of the article directories post direct link to your blog/site.
The seventh way is also a good and quite useful way to generate traffic for your site but it is time consuming.The way is to submit videos to video sharing sites like Youtube , Metacafe , Dailymotion , Viddler etc that are related to your blog post/news and put a link to that post in the description of the video and also create a watermark effect of your url at the starting and end of the video .This will also help your to increase your search engine traffic.
The last but not the least .This way is to submit your post as pdf or word document to document sharing sites like scribd but you should create a hyperlink in the document or you have to post your link in the description of the document but i will recommend you to create a hyperlink in the document as it will create more traffic for you.
