Microsoft cancels innovative Xbox Live quiz game

It happened to Firefly, it happened to Futurama, it almost happened to Jericho...and now it’s happened to popular Xbox Live game, 1 vs. 100.

Based on the TV quiz show of the same name, 1 vs. 100 pitted a single Xbox Live subscriber against the combined wits of 100 others, to compete for prizes including downloadable games and credit at Microsoft’s online store. Hosted by comedian Chris Cashman, 1 vs. 100 enjoyed two 13-week seasons in 2009 and 2010, but won’t return for a third, publisher Microsoft announced today.

During its beta test period, the game -- which was free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers -- was simultaneously played by 114 ,000 players, earning it a Guinness World Record for the most contestants in a game show. It was popular with game critics, too, many of whom took to Twitter this morning to express their dismay at the news.

In a message on the game’s official blog, the development team thanked fans for their support, saying “We hope to focus on the fun times playing 1 vs 100 as we look back on the two seasons and the enormous amount of time and effort that the development teams and the fans poured into the game.”
