Study: 12 percent can’t see 3D

Looking forward to firing up a 3D game? You might have disappointment in store, according to a figure from Britain’s Eyecare Trust, which found that as much as 12 percent of the population suffer from a visual impairment that prevents them seeing 3D images.

3D entertainment is on the rise.

"3-D technology relies on our eyes’ ability to work together as a co-ordinated team to achieve an accurate perception of depth,” the health charity said. “However, more than one in ten of us (12%) has a visual impairment that means our brains are unable to correctly process the individual images that are transmitted to it via our left and right eyes.”
As many as 37 million Americans could be suffering from the complaint, assuming there’s nothing in hot tea, warm beer, or socialized medicine that makes British eyes differ significantly from their American cousins. It’s also not necessarily obvious to sufferers: their brains often try to compensate for the problem, concealing it during most activities.
Fortunately, the remedy is straightforward: head to your local optometrist, who will be able to detect the condition during a routine vision test, Eyecare Trust said, and prescribe corrective lenses or vision therapy if necessary.
Just, you know, make sure it is a real optometrist, and not a convincing-looking paper cut-out replica of one.
