Flashpoint Grodd of War #1 2011

Grodd of War #1 is a brutal comic book. As the cover implies, there are plenty of heads being removed from their bodies. But the violence isn't just there for shock value, as Sean Ryan and Ig Guara use it effectively to paint a portrait of Flashpoint's Gorilla Grodd where he's a ruler that is never satisfied with his conquests. He constantly yearns for more. As a better analogy, Grodd is made out to be the Alexander of the DCU, weeping because there are no more worlds to conquer.

This one-shot succeeds exactly where it should: providing readers with a quality character study of Grodd to establish his place in the world of Flashpoint. Grodd of War #1 is a story that can be enjoyed by all types of readers -- whether you have read every Flashpoint tie-in or none of them. At its base level, Grodd of War #1 is simply a story about an individual who's never fulfilled.

Special credit also goes to Ig Guara, who does fantastic work on this title. It's not easy drawing gorillas, yet Guara manages to depict them anatomically correct and with distinct personalities to boot. You don't need to read a single line of Ryan's script in order to understand the various characters' mindsets in this issue.

Consider me shocked by the quality of Flashpoint: Grodd of War #1. I truthfully wasn't expecting much, but what I got engaged and entertained me thoroughly. While this book is meant for the Flashpoint diehards, I implore everyone to give it a shot for an interesting done-in-one character portrait of Africa's new ruler.
