Amazon, Wal-Mart trade shots in pre-order price war

Looking to get into some of the year's upcoming games? Thanks to a couple of recent moves by big-box retailers, your pocket-book could well be about to get a little relief -- assuming you don't mind committing yourself to a pre-order.

To celebrate the launch of a new gaming-focused area of its web site, Wal-Mart is offering gamers an attractive deal -- a $50 "eGift card" when you preorder three upcoming 2010 games from a list of 19, which includes Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, Crackdown 2, and Fallout: New Vegas, along with the year's crop of upcoming EA sports titles. (Yes, including Madden.)
Wal-Mart's move follows an apparently successful series of promotions on Amazon.com, which gave customers pre-ordering big-name games like Red Dead Redemption, Split/Second, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 up to $20 credit on a future video games purchase. (Incidentally, it's not too late for that last deal, and Amazon's also currently offering similar deals on some of the year's other big releases, including Madden 11 and Call of Duty: Black Ops.)
Which is the better deal for gamers? Our impartial advice: Check Wal-Mart first. They're matching many of Amazon's $20 offers, and Wal-Mart's gift cards can be spent on anything the store offers through its web site, whereas Amazon's promotional credit only applies to future video game purchases. Based on our experiences, though, you might find Amazon does a better job at getting you your game on release day.
